Nigeria University Games Association Nuga has begun
preparations for Nigeria’s
participation in the 28th World University Games scheduled to take
place in Gwangju, South Korea July 3 to 14.

Orodele in an exclusive interview revealed that plans have been concluded for
camping and trials athletics, judo and taekwondo, while it had indeed applied
to world governing body FISU for a be given spots in two team sports- football
and basketball. “Nigeria
has been placed standby for those team sports and we intend to attend the Heads
of Delegates meeting in April in the
host city where decision would be made on our application,” he stated. Angola and Mozambique
are selected from Africa basketball men
with Nigeria on the reserve
list while Mozambique and Uganda
are selected in the women category. In the football event, South Africa men and women have the spots for
Africa in while Namibia and Nigeria
are on the reserve list.
Orodele revealed that NUGA had made contacts with the
Athletics Federation of Nigeria AFN in respect of getting the athletics team
ready. Money, a key issue that had stalled Nigeria’s participation in the past
couple of games. The NUGA scribe was asked how much the association needed to
prepare and send a team to the games, he said “it’s one key issue being
finalized but I can tell you it’s in the region of N200 million. We are also
waiting for response from a company we have contacted to sponsor our football
championship which would enable us pick a team for the Games."
