A father of two from Sydney, Astralia has drowned after trying to fetch his son's shoe from a popular lake on the New South Wales mid-north coast.
William Lam, a 32-year-old from Berala, was fishing with his
three-year-old son near the Forster-Tuncurry bridge at 9am on Wednesday
when he jumped into Wallis Lake to retrieve the shoe.
The conditions at the lake were "atrocious", according to
witnesses. Police said it was too dangerous for bystanders to get a boat
into the water.
Witnesses told Great Lakes police they saw Mr Lam near a yellow buoy
before a strong current pulled him under the water, as his wife and
children looked on.
"The witnesses grabbed the son once they saw the father in
the water and called police. The little boy was then taken back to
Forster Police Station and is OK," said Great Lakes Inspector Charne
Musgrove.
Police, Marine Rescue NSW and Forster Surf Life Saving Club
launched an extensive search and rescue operation that lasted more than
24 hours.
They admitted that Mr Lam's chances were slim as he was "not a great swimmer".
"We can't sugar-coat this, the conditions were bad yesterday, we believe he has most likely drowned." said Inspector Musgrove.
