Former Super Falcons handlers, Eucharia Uche and Ismaila Mabo have given
kudos to the girls for reasserting Nigeria’s
top edge in Africa by winning the African Women Championship in Namibia
for the seventh time. Speaking to Sports vanguard, Uche, an ex-Falcon who has
the record as first Nigeria female coach to win the Championship, said she was
particularly happy at the way the players carried their game high during the
championship such that it was clear from “go” they were out to reclaim the cup
lost in 2012 to Equatorial Guinea who incidentally hosted the 7th
edition. “Well, I’m glad at the outcome. My commendation to the coach and
players not just for winning, by also for holding their heads high throughout
the competition, I saw a team that played with determination and courage and
these often translated into goals scored with each passing game. It brought
back memories of my playing days. There was no doubt they were out to do it,”
she said. Speaking in the same vein, Mabo, who had the privilege of handling
the team in to an World Cup and Olympic
games, praised the team for a job well done, saying :”kudos to the coach for
doing a right mix of old and new, senior and junior players.” Mabo said “if our
system can sustain the tempo of churning out new players who team up with the
more experienced one in good time and with planning, in no time we can look
forward to doing well on the world stage.
Meanwhile, both Uche and Mabo have also expressed full support for an
appropriate reward for the team by the government, in the same manner
they are
calling on the NFF set the tone for the Falcons to have an outstanding
World
Cup next year in Canada, “We have not arrived yet, we should regard our
victory
in Namibia as part dress rehearsal for Canada. “First players owe
themselves a
duty to set a target for the world.. That means there should be no one
should
see the job as done until we are able to surpass our past performance in
the world
Cup.,” Mabo stated.Nigeria beat Cameroun 2-0 in the AWC final last
weekend to clinch a seventh title and ticket to the world cup in Canada.
