Sports: When Runners And Trains Collide

-Agencies *Runners forced to take evasive action after twice coming into contact with freight trains IT’S one of the more unusual obstacles to interrupt a sporting event. Not once but twice, a massive freight train interfered with marathon runners as they attempted to beat each other home. About 300 athletes were taking part in the second annual Mill Race Marathon in Columbus, Indiana in the United States when a train first rumbled past, forcing everyone to give way. The second time a train cut through the circuit, it was forced to stop and sound its horn as runners crossed in front of, climbed over and even ducked under the locomotive. “There were so many people, and they just wanted to make their time, that they just didn’t care,” one witness said. No one was injured. Geoffrey Kiprotich won the men’s race in 2:26:33 while Sarah Overpeck took out the women’s in 3:04:44. Originally published as When runners and trains collide
