Still unable to raise
required funds to camp athletes for participation in the World
University to organize a series of open trials in the individual
sports already entered for the games to select athletes that would
constitute the contingent.
NUGA secretary, Bola
Orodole said in an interview in Lagos that funds had been a draw-
back to putting preparation into full gear, the association was still
hopeful of raising some funds to send a Nigerian delegation to Korea.
“It is my hope that companies we have been speaking to will
respond. So, in other not to caught unawares, there would be open
trials between now and end of May to pick athletes in sports entries
were made which in part should also serve as tune up for the Games,”
he said.
Taekwondo serves the open
trials which event holds at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ife
Thursday April 30 to Saturday May 2. “Decision to make it open is
to attract participation by athletes from the Nigeria Inter-
Collegiate system-NUGA, NIPOGA and NACEGA, meaning that athletes
belonging to polytechnics, universities and Colleges of Education can
participate if they so wish. That would give us variety of athletes
and lots of choices to make,” he stated.
“We are going to monitor
their performances to ensure we pick out the best while still
continuing effort to secure the 0necessary funds for our
participation.”
The schedule made
available to Sports Vanguard shows that another trial will hold still
in May just as the NUGA scribe expressed hopes there would be trials
in all sports bound for Kwangju- athletics, judo badminton and two
team sports football and basketball despite the fact that the country
was placed oGames in South Korea, July 3to 14, the Nigeria University
Games Association, NUGA says it plans n waiting list for both.
