ODDNEWS: Tortoise Gets wheels For Legs

*90-year-old tortoise gets wheels after losing legs in rat attack

A 90-year-old tortoise has a new lease on life after her owner pimped her ride.
The family pet, called Mrs T, had been hibernating in a garden shed in Wales when a rat gnawed off her front legs.
When owner Jude Ryder found out what had happened to her beloved pet, she rushed it to the vet. Despite spending close to $AU2000 in vet bills, the tortoise was left severely disabled.
Desperate to increase her pet’s quality of living, Ms Ryder enlisted the help of her son, Dale. The engineer used resin to connect an axis containing wheels from a model aircraft onto her shell.
“We were afraid she may have to be put down but her new set of wheels have saved her life,” Ms Ryder told the BBC.
“She took to her new wheels straight away but she has had to learn how to turn and stop...She can get a good speed up, much faster than before.”

NPFL: Rangers Woes Continue, As Dolphin Grab First Win Of Season

Dolphins of Port Harcourt ended  their winless start to the season when they narrowly grabbed a 1-0 win over Enugu Rangers in midweek Nigeria Premier League tie. And that got coach Kelechi Emeteole into more troubles with fans of the coal- city, leaving his future in doubt. Both teams have struggled in recent times with Dolphins yet to win a game this term while Rangers have lost their last two games by 1-0 margins including Sunday's home loss to Giwa FC. Meanwhile Heartland succumbed to their first defeat of the season, a 1-0 loss to neighbours Abia Warriors at the Dan Anyiam Stadium on Wednesday evening. Ifeanyi Onyeali's strike two minutes from time made all the difference in the second Oriental Derby of the League season. The much anticipated game drew an impressive crowd of over 3,000 Heartland fans buoyed by their side's impressive run.In other results Giwa FC continued their fine run of form with an emphatic 4-0 dismantling of struggling Akwa United but it was Abia Warriors that came off the superior side in the Oriental Derby that saw them deal a crushing blow to Heartland’s quick-off-the-block title chase.
Enyimba International may have rediscovered their groove as last season’s top scorer, Mfon Udoh scored on the 56th minute to avenge their last season’s defeat in this same fixture. Enyimba’s campaign last season also started on a stuttering note until about Match Day 5 when they gradually clawed their way to mid table.
In Lafia, Nasarawa United made sure Kano Pillars joined the band of sides that has deficits as a brace of goals from Esosa Igbinoba made the consolatory strike by Rabiu Ali (66’) of no consequence to the contest for the three points.
Gabros made it three wins from as many games at their Beverly Hills Hotel Stadium in Nnewi and in the process disrobed Lobi Stars of their draw specialist toga. Lobi had drawn all four previous games this season and held off all the forays of the Gabros attack until four minutes from full time when Elu Wilson executed a long range hit that sailed past the hands of Lobi’s goalkeeper, Akpor Ekoi into the net. Barely three minutes after, Okereke Maduabuchi made victory sure, rounding off the back line to square for an unmarked Chukwudi Stephen to do a simple tap-in.
In Port Harcourt, Ifeanyi Egwim converted from the penalty spot for Dolphins to claim their first win and three points of the season. Rangers were their victim in a match that provided very little talking point as both sides chose a rather cautious approach. Victor Yakubu also converted from the penalty spot to shoot Wikki Tourists to the top of the log on ten points. Late rally from players of Warri Wolves to split the points failed.
Shooting Stars also joined the band of first time winners hitting Kwara United 2-0 to continue the Afonja Warriors’ misery that began in Ilorin in the defeat to Heartland while El-Kanemi Warriors also scrapped a 1-0 defeat against Sunshine Stars at the adopted Kano Pillars Stadium in Sabon Gari.

SPORTS/football: Guardiola Returns To Barcelona In Champions League Semis

Pep Guardiola will return to face his former club Barcelona after the draw for the Champions League semi-finals on Friday paired the Catalans with Bayern Munich while holders Real Madrid were drawn against Juventus.
Barcelona, who are in the last four for the seventh time in eight seasons, will be at home to the Bundesliga side in the first leg on May 5 or 6 with the return at the Allianz Arena the following week.
Guardiola won the European Cup as a player with Barcelona in 1992 and then won 14 trophies in four seasons as coach, including the Champions League in 2009 and 2011.
He had made way for Tito Vilanova by the time Barca were destroyed 7-0 on aggregate by Bayern in the semi-finals in 2013, when the German giants went on to win the trophy.
Meanwhile, Madrid must go to Italy for the first leg of their tie against Serie A leaders Juventus as they look to become the first club to retain the trophy in the Champions League era.
The tie is a repeat of the 1998 final, which Madrid won 1-0 in Amsterdam, and the Spanish side will be widely fancied to come out on top on this occasion too.
“We will face a legendary club, I think it is good news for football and the Champions League that Juventus have returned to this level and obviously it will be a very even tie,” said former Real player Emilio Butragueno, now the club’s Director of Institutional Relations.

NNL Moves To Stop Deptor Clubs From League

*Heartland coach: Erasmus Onuh
The management of the Nigerian National League (NNL) has warned that clubs that are yet to complete their registration formalities less than few days to the May 2, 2015 kick-off date will be stopped from participating in the competition.
This warning was issued by the Executive Secretary of the NNL, Lawrence Katken who has said that the management will no longer tolerate late registration by some clubs, pointing out that the delay by some clubs to complete registration formalities even with the late commencement of the league leaves much to be desired.
According to him, “I want to appeal to the defaulting clubs to use the two weeks postponement of the league to put the papers in order. We cannot allow clubs that fail to register to be part of the league even when such club or clubs has or have been drawn in a group.”
Katken therefore urged the clubs to do the needful or have themselves to blame when the hammer will fail on May 2.

Back? I Was Never Away, Says Barca's Iniesta

Andres Iniesta will always be a hero to Barcelona and Spain fans but some had started to question whether the 30-year-old's best days were behind him.
The playmaker's outrageous skills were on full display again on Tuesday, however, as he cut through the Paris St Germain midfield and released Neymar in front of goal to put Barca 1-0 ahead in the 14th minute of their Champions League quarterfinal, second leg.
Already leading 3-1 from last week's first leg in Paris, Neymar's goal, the first of a double in a 2-0 win for Barca on the night, effectively killed PSG's chances of a comeback.

SPORTS-football: NFF Not Dribbling Keshi, Says Pinnick

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick has called a lie on insinuations that the Federation is deceiving Mr. Stephen Keshi with a new contract that would never be signed.
“I am shocked at these insinuations because the NFF Executive Committee gave the go-ahead for a new contract with Keshi at its meeting in Uyo last month, and Keshi and his lawyers have looked at the contract agreement and are satisfied with every word in the final draft.
“As a Federation, we have gone ahead to arrange some refresher programmes for Keshi, at nobody’s prodding, and which are meant to enhance Keshi’s knowledge and improve the man’s capacity as a world-class strategist. We woud not be doing that if we are not ready to work with him. No one is forcing Keshi on us. We have sat down with him and he has agreed to all terms that we put down and he is ready to work to lift the Super Eagles back to glorious days.”

FA Cup: Federici Leaves The Field In Tears After FA Cup Extra-Time Blunder

Reading manager Steve Clarke and Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger sympathised with Reading's Australian goalkeeper Adam Federici whose horrendous mistake in extra time gifted Alexis Sanchez the winning goal in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.
Federici, who had had a fine game for the Championship underdogs making seven saves including one majestic stop from a Gabriel header in the second half, left the field in tears after Arsenal battled to a 2-1 win to reach a record 19th FA Cup final against either Liverpool or Aston Villa on May 30.
The winning goal came when Sanchez, who gave Arsenal a first-half lead, cut in from the left and fired in an easily stoppable shot.
But the ball squirmed through the 30-year-old Australian's grasp and although he lunged back to collect it, it was already a metre over the line.
Clarke consoled him on the field at the end of the game and praised, rather than blamed him, when he spoke to reporters.
"This is the life of a goalkeeper and Adam Federici is a top goalkeeper," said Clarke, whose side are 19th in the English second tier.
"His performances in the Championship have been crucial for this football club. We stick by him. We don't lose because of Adam, We lose as a team and we win as a team.
"I understand, and the players and the supporters all understand his worth to this squad and this club. He is a strong character, he will take it on the chin and when we play Birmingham on Wednesday night I am sure he will be as good as he always is."
Wenger said he felt for the goalkeeper and then admitted to being unaware goalkeeper Dan Lewis let in a similar howler when Arsenal lost 1-0 to Cardiff City in their first FA Cup final in 1927.
Lewis always believed that the ball squirmed out of his control because of the sheen on his new shirt and ever since then, no Arsenal keeper has ever worn a top unless it has been washed first.
"I never knew that -- I am quite mature and experienced but I was not there in 1927 but I have learned something new today, thank you very much," he said to howls of laughter from reporters.
"In the end today we were a bit lucky because their goalkeeper made a mistake and I understand that he is distraught. But he kept them in the game for long periods. He made a lot of good saves."

Africa Beach Football Championship: Nigeria Beat Ivory Coast:Hit Semi Final

Nigeria’s Beach football national teams fought bravely to defeat Ivory Coast 7-6 in Victoria on Thursday , despite being a man down for all of the last two periods and overtime and finish comfortably at the top of Group A of the 2015 African Beach Soccer Championship.
A semi-final ticket was already on hand before the match, but the 2011 FIFA World Cup quarter-finalists put their best legs out and aimed for outright victory from the first blast of the referee’s whistle.
However, Cote d’Ivoire scored first before the Eagles leveled, and then the game became a see-saw of sorts after Nigerian player Igudia Godspower was shown the red card late in the first period.
The Ivorians tried to capitalize on the one -man advantage but the Eagles dug their feet into the sands to repel what could have been a defeat and perhaps second place in the group.
Captain Isiaka Olawale led the charges well on the beach and Emeka Ogbonna could not be stopped, and Abu Azeez was the song on everyone’s lips in what the commentator called ‘Match of the Tournament’.
Olawale and Ogbonna earned a brace each, with a goal each from Azeez, Bartholomew Ibenegbu and Adams Taiwo. Ogbonna, who now has six goals, scored the overtime goal that gave Nigeria victory after full time ended 6-6.
Nigeria will now play the second –placed team in Group B in Saturday’s semi finals.

MAXWWEL: I Don’t Care What People Think Of Me

It’s unlikely Glenn Maxwell is one of the Punjab players concerned by the shirt sponsorship, if his latest interview is anything to go by.
In it, The Big Show reiterated his hopes of playing Test cricket even if some have pigeonholed him as a short-form specialist.
“I don’t care what people think about me,” Maxwell told Times of India.
“I think there are more equipped players than me playing Test cricket at the moment. But I would not disappoint the team if I get the chance to play Tests as well.”

Sports: CONDOMS Land With A Bang In Indian Premier League

With its popularity among young males, it’s fair to say sport and condoms are a good fit.
But that didn’t stop a minor controversy breaking out in India when a condom brand with the rather unfortunate name of ‘Manforce’ sealed a shirt sponsorship deal with Kings XI Punjab.
Team owner Preity Zinta was forced - or is it Manforced? - to defend the move after a story appeared in the Hindustan Times claiming some players were uncomfortable running around with the contraceptive brand on their backs.
“There are other teams in the league who have advertisement from the same industry,” Zinta told Times of India, denying the Hindustan Times story was true. That report quoted an unnamed player as saying “I don’t know what to say, my family will be watching and it’s an embarrassing situation. Also, friends are bound to tease us.”
Zinta laughed off the supposed unrest.
“In fact, the players were amused when such news appeared in a certain section of the media,” shed said. “We as a franchisee see it as an opportunity to create awareness amongst the young generation today.”

Relationships Marriage:Serial Bride Wed Eight Men At Once

New York mum-of-two Liana Barrientos arrested for being married to eight men at once

A NEW York woman went on a decade-long bridal binge — and was married to as many as eight men at once, court papers revealed

Liana Barrientos turned walking down the aisle into an Olympic sport, getting hitched 10 times since 1999, including one stretch in 2002 when she said “I do” five times.
The 38-year-old blonde had collected six husbands before the first one filed for divorce in 2002. She added three more before the second one dumped her in 2003.
Prosecutors haven’t said why Barrientos is so marriage-mad.
“The motive was definitely not love,” one source said.
Her most recent nuptials came on March 4, 2010.
Barrientos is accused of falsifying official records. She allegedly claimed in documents for her 2010 wedding that she had never been married before.
And she told an investigator from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office that her exchange of vows with a man named Salle Keita “was her first and only marriage,” court papers charge.
Barrientos also allegedly submitted different variations of her name in marriage papers, omitting or abbreviating her middle name or changing spellings.
She was busted Oct. 1 on two felony counts of offering a false instrument for filing. She is due back in court Friday.
Barrientos’ apparent fondness for marriage runs counter to sentiments she expressed on Twitter.
A Bronx DA spokeswoman declined to say if other charges, such as bigamy, would be filed, or if any of her hubbies would be charged.
In addition to those men, Barrientos has two baby daddies. One of them, Carlos Garcia, kicked her out of his Bronx apartment a few weeks ago, the building’s super said.
“She was arrested . . . and he doesn’t want her back,” Ruben George told The Post. “They have a kid together. She has one with him and one with somebody else.”
Garcia, whose daughter with Barrientos is about 4 months old, didn’t answer a knock on his door.
Barrientos’ lawyer, Chris Wright, declined to comment.

OPINION:Like all Refs, Howard Webb Will Be Remembered For His Mistakes

First published -

Great as he was with the whistle, the retiring official was perceived as biased towards United and failed to show red when it mattered most Loathed a lot more than he was liked, the surprise retirement of England’s most successful referee, Howard Webb, has thrown up some interesting social commentary about the perceived state of officiating among fans. Despite refereeing with distinction for a quarter of a century, being a professional full-time referee in the English Premier League for 11 years and still at the top of his game, twitter was awash with sarcastic comments and sardonic photos of the 43-year-old Yorkshireman. If the tweets are anything to go by, the majority of EPL players, coaches, commentators and fans have the perception Webb has always been biased toward Manchester United and Alex Ferguson.
Webb also set precedents on the international scene. In 2010, he became the first-ever official to referee the Uefa Champions League final and the Fifa World Cup final in the same year. Along with his trusted assistant referees, Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey, no other World Cup final referee has ever returned to officiate a consecutive World Cup, which the trio did this year in Brazil.
Despite these impressive international achievements, most people remember Webb for failing to send off Nigel de Jong for his “kung fu kick” on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup final.
This kind of negative reaction demonstrates just what sticks in people’s highly selective memories. Nevertheless, Webb has achieved what 99.9 per cent of referees can only dream about.
Webb’s experience and standing has inspired others and there are millions of men and women around the world who are passionate about being match officials. Because of his integrity, commitment and high profile, Webb will instinctively know other referees have and will benefit from his work.
Webb is expected to have more of a PR role as he takes up a post as technical director of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the company that manages the EPL’s select group of 17 professional referees. This enhanced media role should help PGMOL educate players, coaches, commentators and fans about the rules of the game as well as explain how referees interpret and deal with incidents on the pitch.
Webb’s first task was to respond to specific personal allegations, namely that he is a Manchester United supporter, by saying: “There’s no element of truth in it. It’s not something that affected me or played on my mind at all. It wasn’t hurtful.”
Webb’s humour, as well as his integrity and honesty, comes through. “What does play on my mind is when I’ve made a mistake, particularly an influential one that has affected the outcome of a game. I’d be dishonest if I said it didn’t bother me,” he said.
These mistakes are inevitable and Webb has admitted the use of video technology to help referees may not be too far away and believes many top-level referees would embrace it.
“Anything that will make the job easier and make us more accurate is worth being looked at,” said Webb. “But we really need to be careful not to change the high intensity and fast flow that makes football such a good spectacle. I’m not anti anything that would make the life of a referee more easy and more credible. Practically, it is going to be really difficult to implement.”
With hindsight, Webb acknowledged he would have sent off De Jong if he – or a colleague – had access to a video monitor to assess the full brutality of the challenge.
Mike Riley, general manager of PGMOL, is also open to referees using video technology. “Technology evolves all the time and there will be ways we can help referees.”
At 43, Webb could have carried on as a Fifa referee for another couple of years – the official retirement age is 45 – possibly ending with a shot at the 2016 European championship.

Nigerian Referees Also Falsify Their Ages, Says ACP Kigigha

First published-
CAF and FIFA Referees Fitness Instructor, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Felix Kigigha landed a severe blow to his own constituency of the men in black when he revealed that the age cheat syndrome widely suspected in the age grade players in the country, is also deeply rooted among referees.
He told Vanguard Sports In Owerri that “I think Nigerian referees are over- aged. Many of them I have found out falsified their ages to remain in business and that is part of the virus ravaging the personnel and denying football in the country deriving valuable officiating.
ACP Kigigha, who is in charge of Zone-C of the Imo State Police Command and himself a retired referee, said “I have noticed that many are over aged working as CAF and FIFA referees fitness instructor and it demoralizes me because many fail and do not attain even the minimum standards for fitness which I have also seen is impacting on performance being also an NFF match commissioner. “So, when fitness is conducted according to laid down rules and procedures and they fall short, my report sticks because will not bulge on standards because I also have my name and reputation of the profession to protect.
Explaining further, he said it is a matter the NFF and NRA have to put measures in place to sort out before it ruins the game.”

ODD-SPORTS: Ref;s Blunder Forces Game To Resume five Days After

FOR the first time in its history, European football’s governing body responded to a team’s protests by unexpectedly ordering part of a match to be replayed because of a referee’s error.
Five days after the original game, the under-19s women’s teams of England and Norway suited and booted and played the final 10 seconds again on Thursday — starting by retaking the penalty kick that prompted the controversy.
England’s Leah Williamson sent the spotkick into the bottom left of the Norwegian goal to make it 2-2. And the game had barely kicked off again when the referee blew the final whistle, and both England and Norway celebrated qualifying for the U19s European Championship.
England had similarly scored its penalty on Saturday in Belfast in the sixth minute of injury time but it was disallowed when an England player encroached the area. However, German referee Marija Kurtes then wrongly awarded a free kick to Norway instead of retaking the penalty.

Sports-Life:Pele Throws Copa America Challenge To Messi, Neymar

Brazilian legend Pele is looking forward to a star-studded Copa America tournament this summer -- but has challenged Barcelona stars Lionel Messi and Neymar to reproduce their best club form at international level.

The three-time World Cup winner said the June 11-July 4 tournament in Chile promised to be a "Copa of Stars" with Messi and Neymar being joined by the likes of in-form Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.

"These days the individual players are better known than the teams," Pele said during a visit to a homeless encampment. "It's going to be a 'Copa of Stars', no doubt."

However, Pele questioned whether Argentina captain Messi and Brazilian talisman Neymar would be able to hit the heights of their best club form.

Despite leading Argentina to the World Cup final last year, Messi is often accused of failing to sparkle in the famous jersey of the 'Albiceleste'. Pele also questioned whether the 27-year-old would be on top form in Chile.

"When he's in Spain, with Barcelona, with a team he already knows and knows well, he's a player," Pele said.

"But Messi when he's with the Argentinian team is not the same thing," the 74-year-old icon said.

"It's a different way of playing -- the Argentinian team is not organised the same way. The same thing happens with Neymar and Brazil."

Pele meanwhile shied away from picking a winner for the tournament, saying only that Argentina and hosts Chile would start among the favorites.

"Today football is very even -- you can't say who will win," he said. "With computers and television, everyone knows everything about their opponents. It's hard to say who will reach the final."

Pele was speaking on the sidelines of a visit to a homeless encampment south of Santiago set up by a charity to help 30 families living in extreme poverty.

AAG Qualifier: Falcons Vow to beat Mali

Nigeri’s senior female national team have vowed they would secure an outright victory in today’sAll Africa Games (AAG) second leg tie at the Abuja National Stadium today.
The African champions drew the first leg 1-1 in Bamako and will progress to the next stage even if they end up with a goalless draw today in Abuja
The players have also predicted they would end the encounter by a wide margin goal tally.
“We are gunning for at least a 5-0 victory on Friday(today) and we know it’s possible. We respect the Malians but we know that a big win is all Nigerians want,” spokesperson of the team, Gracious Akujobi said.
Reigning African player of the year, Asisat Oshoala and En Avant Guingamp striker, Desire Oparanozie both missed the first leg in Mali but have been called up for today’s game.
Akujobi says calling up both players does not smack of desperation insisting that the duo “remain players of the team”.
“We have heard people say stuff over the invitation of the team and its puzzling because Asisat and Desire both remain part of the Super Falcons team.
“If the coach feels it is important to call them up for this game, I don’t see anything wrong in that. The truth is it doesn’t really matter.
“We were not at the last edition of the All Africa Games and we want to ensure we are there this time,” she said.

SPORTS: Woman defeats Man In 53 secs

AS the debate about whether UFC women’s champion Ronda Rousey could beat a man continues to rage, one woman has proven its possible.
Larissa Schroeder, an amateur fighter in Brazil, squared off and beat male opponent Fernando Lemos last month.
According to MMAfighting.com, Schroeder was scheduled to make her mixed martial arts debut on March 28 only for her female opponent to pull out at the last minute.
So her coach, Cristiano Benedetto, asked her if she wanted to fight Lemos to get a feel of what it’s like to fight in a cage.
“They are training partners and are used to spar,” Benedetto told MMAfighting.com. “I don’t think it was a big deal. That’s what they do every day in the gym.”
Benedetto had no fear of Schroeder getting hurt and was justified when she finished the match via technical knockout — after just 53 seconds.
After a number of exchanges, Schroeder started landing repeated blows with her right hand, forcing the referee to step in as Lemos turned away and stopped fighting.
“As soon as she hit Fernando and blood started to come out of his nose, the fight was over,” Benedetto said. “The referee was a friend of mine and I asked him to stop if one of them got hurt. It was just a one-round fight. No big deal.”
The fight has been a major talking point in MMA circles in Brazil and prompted one promoter to offer Schroeder $1000 to make her professional debut.

FIFA: Figo disputes CAF claim of All-Africa backing for Blatter

FIFA presidential candidate Luis Figo on Wednesday disputed the Confederation of African Football's claim that all 54 votes from the continent will go to incumbent Sepp Blatter in the presidential elections next month.

The former Portugal international, in Egypt at the CAF Congress to canvass for votes, told Reuters he did not believe all Africa was solidly behind Blatter, who seeks re-election on May 29 against Figo, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan and the Dutch football association president Michael van Praag.

"I feel there's a lot of respect for CAF among all the African federations but I'm positive that (CAF president) Mr (Issa) Hayatou did not speak in the name of the 54 members of the confederation," said the former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder.

"Even when he (Hayatou) announced he would support Blatter, we could notice a difference from past congresses when a statement like that normally is followed by a standing ovation.

"This time we heard just a normal applause, which confirms my idea that a lot of African countries understand and agree with the need to change for the better of everyone, especially the national associations.

"In fact there were federation presidents who ensured me they would vote for me but they were reluctant to saying this out loud because they feared reactions against them, their federations and even their countries," said Figo.

"It also to end this kind of atmosphere that I decided to be a candidate. Football should be about a beautiful game and people should be able to express themselves freely and openly."

The CAF congress in Cairo ended on Tuesday with Hayatou declaring Africa's complete support for Blatter's re-election but on all previous occasions when the CAF chief has promised a block of African votes, many have broken ranks.

Blatter Wants Tougher Punishment For Racism

CAIRO: FIFA president Sepp Blatter called for tougher punishment for teams and associations found guilty of racism and discrimination on Tuesday and said monetary sanctions were increasingly ineffective.

Statutes allowed for stiffer sanctions which now had to be implemented as the battle against 'the scourge of racism and discrimination is not being won', he told the Confederation of African Football congress.

"We have to punish not only through fines and stadium closures but we have to use our rules to suspend teams, to take away their points or even to relegate them if racism continues," Blatter said.

Blatter reminded African countries of extensive financial support to the continent's football associations from world football's governing body as he opened the congress in a Cairo hotel on Tuesday.

Blatter, who is expected to get extensive support from the continent's 54 countries when he stands for re-election next month, said FIFA had spent some $700 million on various programmes across Africa.

"We should maybe spend more to prepare a better future for the children," he added, mirroring the promises of his three rivals in the FIFA election for more financial assistance for member countries.

Blatter was met with a warm ovation from the African delegates in contrast to having to sit through stinging criticism when he attended the UEFA congress in Vienna last month.

Tuesday's CAF congress was also attended by Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan, Dutch Football Association President Michael van Praag and former Portugal international Luis Figo, who are all standing against Blatter, but they were not permitted to address the assembly.

SPORTS:Gabon To Host 2017 Africa Cup Of Nations

CAIRO: Gabon won a three-country contest against Algeria and Ghana on Wednesday to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament.

The result of a vote among 14 Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee members was announced mid-afternoon in a Cairo hotel after the three candidates made short presentations.

The Gabonese were co-hosts with neighbours Equatorial Guinea of the 2012 Cup of Nations.

A Gabonese Football Federation official said maches would be staged in capital city Libreville, Franceville, Port Gentil and Oyem.

Stadiums in Libreville and Franceville were used for the 2012 tournament and the other two venues are expected to be ready by mid-2016, the official added.

They will be the second successive central African country to host the championship after Equatorial Guinea this year.

Choosing Gabon ended a 1,529-day saga over who would host the next edition of the biennial African football showpiece.

South Africa were selected as 2017 hosts four years ago, but traded tournaments with 2013 hosts Libya because of post-Moamer Kadhafi-era violence in the north African state.

As deadly Libyan inter-militia fighting intensified, the oil-rich country were forced to withdraw as 2017 hosts as well.

Algeria, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan and Zimbabwe then applied to stage the 16-nation, three-week tournament.

But CAF dropped Kenya, Sudan and Zimbabwe from the bidding contest, saying they did not meet the criteria to host the tournament.

Kenya (1996) and Zimbabwe (2000) had previously been selected as Cup of Nations hosts only to pull out due to lack of finance.

Egypt later withdrew, saying they did not wish to compete against fellow Arab nation Algeria.

However, security was probably also a factor as the decision came just days after 20 football supporters where killed in a Cairo stampede following clashes with police.

Before the selection of Gabon, north and west African countries staged 10 tournaments each, east Africa five, central Africa four and southern Africa three.

There were two co-hostings -- Ghana and Nigeria in 2000, as late replacements for Zimbabwe, and Equatorial Guinea and Gabon three years ago.

Equatorial Guinea became 2015 hosts just two months before the Cup of Nations kicked off last January after Morocco withdrew because they feared visiting supporters could bring the deadly Ebola virus into the country.

CAF president Issa Hayatou, vice-presidents Suketu Patel and Almamy Kabele Camara, and 11 executive committee members chose the 2017 hosts.

Each of the 14 officials, including Algerian Mohamed Raouraoua and Ghanaian Kwesi Nyantakyi, had one vote and the winning nation required at least eight.

Fed Cup: Sharapova To Lead Russia Against Germany

MOSCOW: World number two Maria Sharapova will spearhead Russia in their Fed Cup World Group semifinal against Germany at Sochi on April 18-19, team captain Anastasia Myskina announced Wednesday.

The five-time Grand Slam title winner must compete in the women's team event if she wants to bid for gold at the Rio Olympics next year.

The 27-year-old Sharapova made a rare but decisive Fed Cup appearance in February helping Russia to beat Poland in the opening round at Krakow.

It was just her fourth Fed Cup appearance since her 2008 debut.

Four-time champions Russia are trying to shrug off the bitter memories of a disappointing 2014 season, when they lost 4-0 to Australia in their opening round clash.

Myskina added that in addition to Sharapova and four-time Grand Slam title winner Svetlana Kuznetsova, ranked world 25, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 38th in the WTA rankings, will also play along with world number 71 Elena Vesnina.

The match on the red clay courts of Adler Arena will be the fifth meeting between the two nations with Russia holding a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head record.

However, Germany, two-time Fed Cup winners in 1987 and 1992, won 3-2 in their last meeting between the two sides in the 2002 World Group first round.

The Czech Republic host France in the second semifinal in Ostrava.

SPORTS:Usain Bolt ready for World Championships

Multiple Olympic champion Usain Bolt has taken a step forward in his preparations as he bids to defend his world titles this season and remains unfazed by the challenge from sprinter Justin Gatlin.
American Gatlin dominated the Diamond League 2014, running 9.77 seconds and 19.68 seconds in 100 metres and 200 metres. Bolt's coach Glen Mills said the sprinter had stepped up his preparations since running 46.37 seconds over 400m in Kingston, Jamaica in March.
"Usain has made significant strides since the last time you saw him," Mills was quoted as saying by BBC.
Bolt ran only three races last year but said he is optimistic about the current season.
"I want to run really fast this season so I'm working on it. I'm happy with where I'm at. I'm doing a lot of work leading up to this first run in Brazil in April - that's the focus and that's what we're working towards," the 28-year-old said.
Bolt will bid for a third 100m gold and a fourth 200m gold in succession at August's World Championships in Beijing.
Gatlin, 33, won the 100m Olympic gold in 2004 and the World Championship gold in 2005.
"We take all competitors with a level of seriousness. But the truth of the matter is Usain at his best doesn't have much to worry about," Mills said.

Sports: I want to replace Iheanacho in Eaglets, says Aliu Bolaji

Budding Star Aliu Adams Bolaji from BRF Football Academy, Lagos, was a house hold name in the 2011 and 2012 respectively in the Lagos Secondary School’s Principals Cup Soccer Competition while featuring for Obele Odan Community Senior High School, in Surulere, Lagos. The utility player registered seven goals in the 2012 competition before his school crashed out in the semifinals tie against Agege High School, at Agege stadium. But the player wants to achieve a greater height in the game. Speaking in Lagos, the six feet tall young star footballer described Rooney of Man United FC and Man City and Nigeria’s own Kelechi Iheanacho as his role models. “In-fact my greatest desire now is to take over Iheanacho’s positional role in the national U.17 National team. If I am given a chance to prove my mettle by the handlers of the Golden Eaglets “I am working hard to achieve this objective, I have the speed. I can score with both legs and nodding as well,” the budding star footballer stated. He appealed to the handlers of the Golden Eaglets to please give him a chance for trial so that he could prove his mettle.

The draw will be held in Cairo immediately after the announcement of the host nation for the tournament.
For the first time the host country will participate in the qualifying stages for the AFCON. However, the matches concerned will not count for any points in their group, and will instead be classified as friendlies.
Fifty two teams will be divided into 13 groups of four teams each. A four-tiered seeding system will see one team from each tier allocated per group.

FEATURE: Tanzanian Albinos Inside Out

Albinos have long been stigmatized in society, particularly in rural areas where education about the genetic condition is low. In East Africa, and Tanzania in particular, the albino population is extremely high compared to the global population, and the albino community sometimes finds itself the victim of brutal attacks.

Albino people are sometimes thought to have magical powers

Some people believe that albinos possess magical powers, including the ability to transmit prosperity to others. This is the result of a severe lack of education about albinism, its genetic causes, and the rarity with which it is seen around the world.

Albino body parts are prized by witchcraft practitioners

People who practice witchcraft reportedly pay as much as $75,000 for a complete sets of albino body parts. These have been used in rituals, concoctions, and potions in an attempt to transmit the supposed magical properties.

Witch doctors have been arrested for attacks on albino people

As of mid-March 2015, more than 200 witchdoctors and traditional healers were arrested in Tanzania in connection with attacks on albino people. In January 2015, Tanzania officially banned witchdoctors from practicing in the hopes of curbing the killings.

Graves of albinos have been dug up and desecrated

Due to the demand for albino body parts, some people have gone so far as to dig up albinos’ graves and steal parts. Often the graves of albinos are sealed with concrete to keep out grave robbers.

Conversely, albinos are also perceived to be cursed

While witch doctors have propagated the notion that albinos have positive magical properties, others believe that albinos are cursed and bring bad luck. This has led to high rates of infanticide among albino babies.
DailyMail.co.uk

Albinism has been linked to inbreeding

Albinism is a genetic condition that researchers have recently linked to inbreeding. Both parents, who may or may not be albinos, must carry the gene to pass it on to the child. In Western countries, the incidence of albinism is one in 20,000 people. In East African countries such as Tanzania, it’s closer to one in 1,400 people.

Many albinos in Tanzania have migrated to urban areas for safety

In Tanzania, where the highest rate of albinism exists in the world, a number of albinos have moved to the Dar es Salaam area. Due to the persecution in rural areas, many feel safer in an urban setting where the attacks are less frequent.

Women are often accused of infidelity if they give birth to an albino child

Due to the lack of education about albinism and its origins, fathers often accuse mother of infidelity if they give birth to albino children. Mothers can be accused of being unfaithful with a white man, or the child is thought to be the ghost of a European colonist.

Health: Man Urinated Non- Stop For 20 Years

Health Problems The man with a huge ‘hard-boiled egg’ inside him
AFTER more than 20 years of constantly running to the toilet, an elderly man has discovered the source of his discomfort.
A CAT scan revealed a giant “boiled egg” was pressing on the 62-year-old’s bladder.
The giant lump, described as “free-floating, smooth, firm and rubbery”, weighed about 220g, heavier than a large orange.
When the “peritoneal loose body” was finally removed, the unidentified man no longer felt like he needed to constantly urinate.
The incredible medical discovery was reported in the latest edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Doctors said the 10cm growth contained predominantly fibrous tissue.
“The findings were consistent with a peritoneal loose body, a formation that is thought to result from torsed, infarcted, and detached epiploic appendages that transform into fibrotic masses,” doctors reported.
“Such masses are often asymptomatic when they are small, but they can be large enough to cause extrinsic compression that is associated with bowel obstruction, urinary retention, or (as in this patient) urinary frequency.”

Sports:Tortured Life Of Andre The Giant

*What life was really for Andre the Giant

IN the 1980s era of professional wrestling there was no bigger star — both physically and in terms of popularity — than Andre the Giant.

Riding the wave of celebrity generated by his role as Fezzik in the film The Princess Bride, Andre would pack out arenas wherever he went.
While his larger-than-life personality and impressive athleticism were all part of Andre’s draw, there was one key reason people bought tickets to see him — his freakish size.
New interviews with those who knew him best reveal the enormous proportions of a man born Andre Roussimoff were both a blessing and a curse.
“He used to tell me, ‘I’d like to be you for a week,’” former wrestling referee and close friend Tim White recently told CBSSports.com. “Because he just couldn’t not be seen or be gawked at.”
Only through the recollections of Andre’s wrestling colleagues can we begin to understand the physical torment and mental anguish he endured.
Born in France in 1946 to a mother who was around 150cm tall, Andre was raised in a village about 65km east of Paris.
He was 180cm tall at age 12, more than 210cm when he was 18 and wore size 26 shoes.
His ultra-deep voice and athletic prowess — coupled with his size — made him an ideal candidate for a professional wrestling career.
After first touring Japan under the moniker Monster Roussimoff, Andre was signed by current WWE owner Vince McMahon’s father in the early 1970s.
But transporting Andre from town to town was a difficult task, as fellow wrestler Jake “The Snake” Roberts recalled.
“I remember there was a big van and they put a beanbag chair in it, and he crawled up in there and plopped in,” Roberts said.
The cause of Andre’s other-worldly size was a condition known as acromegaly, which results in the anterior pituitary gland producing excess growth hormone.
Andre was first told of the syndrome in Japan in the 1970s and while he had fluid drained to relieve pressure on his heart in the early 1980s he refused to have an operation to reverse his condition.
“If this is the size that God wanted me to be, I’m going to be this size,” he reportedly said.
Andre’s billed weight during his time with the WWE was 240kg. But Hulk Hogan, who famously defeated Andre for the first time at WrestleMania III, said he was north of 300kg at his heaviest.
“He was never 500 pounds ... we weighed him at Detroit airport before WrestleMania III and he was 650 or something. He was big, he’d just had back surgery and he was heavy,” Hogan told Grantland’s Bill Simmons.
“His weight varied. It would be like you gaining 20 or 30 pounds, Andre would gain a 100 and it’s no big deal.”
Hogan experienced Andre’s massive weight first-hand when he tore his biceps lifting the giant during the match.
Staying out of the spotlight — and the gawking of strangers — was where he found peace.
“People would make fun of him and point at him and the size of his rear-end, and shit like that,” Roberts said. “It makes you sick that people are so shallow. I don’t know, man. It’s just messed up that they would laugh at this guy.”
“He was kind of a lonely guy,” fellow wrestler Jim Duggan said. “I mean, he was just so big, and wherever he went, everybody would make a fuss out of him. It was a hard life for a guy like that. Just sitting in the aeroplane seats or flying to Japan, you know, there’s no way he could get into the bathroom of an aeroplane.”
In 1993, Andre travelled back to France to be with his ill father, Boris. Andre died of heart failure days after arriving. He was 46.
In his will he’d expressed his wishes to be cremated but accoring to CBSSports.com there wasn’t a crematorium big enough to handle the job so his body was flown back to the US.
Later that year he was the inaugural inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame.

Neymar closing in on Pelé'S Brazil Record

The current Seleção captain already has 43 goals from his first 62 appearances for his country and, at the age of just 23.
There is every chance he will surpass his predecessor’s 77-goal tally at the summit of their nation’s all-time scoring charts. It should be remembered, however, that Pelé can point to his role in three of Brazil’s five World Cup victories, a trophy the Barcelona star is yet to come close to, particularly in the wake of the debacle of 2014.

SPORTS: Rio 2016 Olympic Tickets Go One Sale

Tickets for the Rio 2016 Olympics went on sale to Brazilian residents on Tuesday via the Games' official web portal.
Local fans have until April 30 to request tickets in the first draw with results to be announced in June, organizers said on Tuesday.
Only those who applied for the first installment will be eligible for the second draw in July.
Meanwhile non-residents are now able to see a list of authorized ticket resellers (ATR) in their region.
"Each ATR will have its own sales process and fans should seek this information from the company that will sell tickets in their territory," said Rio 2016 ticketing director Donovan Ferreti. "Any ATRs who are approved after 31 March, will be added to the list subsequently."
About 7.5 million tickets for the Rio Olympics will be put on sale, with more than half being priced at 70 Brazilian reais (about 22 US dollars) or less.
The cheapest sports event tickets will be 40 Brazilian reals (about 13 US dollars) and the most expensive 1,200 Brazilian reais. Seats for the opening ceremony at the Maracana stadium will cost 4,600 Brazilian reais.
Geneneral Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of Nigeria's opposition All Progressives Congress, was officially declared president-elect Wednesday, marking the first time that an incumbent is defeated in the country's presidential election.
Earlier, outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan conceded the weekend race, saying he has kept his promise of free and fair elections to the nation.
Buhari polled 15,424,921, against Jonathan's 12,853,162, to emerge winner of the national election. The president-elect won Jonathan with a margin of 2,571,759 votes.
Buhari, who had unsuccessfully contested in three consecutive presidential elections in the country, between 2003 and 2011, was earlier congratulated by Jonathan as it became rife he had won the battle hours before the official declaration was made by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Innovation: China Builds ‘Great Wall Of Sand’ In The South China Sea; US Panics

CHINA is “creating a great wall of sand” through land reclamation in the South China Sea, causing serious concerns about its territorial intentions, the commander of the US Pacific Fleet says.
Admiral Harry Harris Jr told a naval conference at the Australian War Memorial yesterday that competing territorial claims by several nations in the South China Sea are “increasing regional tensions and the potential for miscalculation.”
“But what’s really drawing a lot of concern in the here and now is the unprecedented land reclamation currently being conducted by China,” he said.
“China is building artificial land by pumping sand on to live coral reefs — some of them submerged — and paving over them with concrete. China has now created over 4 square kilometres (1.5 square miles) of artificial landmass,” he said.
Harris said the region is known for its beautiful natural islands, but “in sharp contrast, China is creating a great wall of sand with dredges and bulldozers over the course of months.”
China claims virtually all of the South China Sea. The Philippines and other countries which have territorial disputes with China in the busy sea have been particularly concerned by the land reclamation projects, which have turned a number of previously submerged reefs in the Spratlys archipelago into artificial islands with buildings, runways and wharves. The islands could be used for military and other facilities to bolster China’s territorial claims.
