Former international Celestine Babayar has urged Samson
Siasia not to tone down standards in his selection of players in order to make Nigeria’s dream
of a second medal prospect in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games a reality.
The Chelsea and Atlanta ’96 gold medalist said in an
interview that “for Siasia to build an Olympic team capable of making an
impression at the All Africa Games and in Rio 2016, he should have an eye for
top quality players who parade outstanding skill.
In the same manner, he urged Siasia to also insist on
discipline and high standards. “He must not compromise on discipline and
standard,” he stated.
Besides he enjoined Siasia to shun acts that could put the
country’s goal of producing another outstanding team for the up-coming Olympics
in jeopardy.
Babayaro, who said it’s not an impossibility to put together
another award winning team in the mould of the Atlanta’96 gold-winning side,
for which he played a remarkable role, cited favouritism and bias as acts that
would not impede success if put aside by the coach Sasia. “If he has the right
collection of players, there in lies the key to success, he added. Babayaro played
alongside the likes of Sunday Oliseh, Garuba Lawal and Dosu Joseph in the 1996
Eagles team.
