You can just imagine the scene: a woman visits her mum to share the
exciting news that she is expecting a baby. Later that day there's more
celebration when the mother finds out that she's pregnant, too.
That's what happened to Destinee Martin, 20, and her mother, Heather Penticoff, 40, last year.
"I knew that they were trying and wanting another baby, but
to find out the same day was just like 'wow,'" Destinee told ABC-7, the
local news station of their home in Lee County, Florida.
Destinee admits she wasn't originally very happy with her mum's news,
but says she soon came around to the benefits of having someone so
close to her who was pregnant while she was.
Amazingly, the women were also given the same due date by their doctors.
"It's not really something you ever want or think could
happen," said Destinee. "To have my mum going through it with me is
probably the most special, amazing thing ever."
"You couldn't try to plan this," her mum added.
The coincidences didn't stop there, as each had medical
issues which meant they would have to be induced. They both went into
Lee Memorial Hospital on Tuesday November 11 – and both children were
born later that day.
Madeline Penticoff, Heather's daughter, arrived first,
weighing 4.05kg. Two hours and 46 minutes later, her nephew Damien came
into the world weighing 3.43kg.
"It's over emotional, it's awesome. It's a blessing. I don't
think I could've been any luckier," said Heather. "It's like having
twins without carrying twins."
While their experience is unique, it's just another factor in
this unusual family, as Destinee has two aunts and an uncle younger
than her.
The new arrivals and their parents are all now living in the
same home after coming from hospital on the same day, Damien in one room
and his aunt Madeline just across the hall.
"We're blessed and we wouldn't change a thing," Heather said.
